Corporate
Scholars Program
Membership
The
Corporate
Scholars Program is an innovative postgraduate program for researchers
and managers from pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Corporate
membership provides sabbaticals and visits in residence at UCSF. Interdisciplinary
research opportunities are available through the Institute. The program
is offered for a small select group of member companies and is customized
for each. Benefits of corporate membership include participation
by company scientists in focused scientific meetings that bring outstanding
speakers and participants from academia and industry to UCSF.

Scientific
Meetings
The environment and
style of the UCSF MDI Scientific Meetings Series
allow the outstanding scientists participating to interact intensively
with peers. The Meetings Series is organized by the Program, hosted by
the Institute and chaired by faculty.
Sabbaticals
and Visits-in-residence
The audience for sabbaticals and visits
in residence includes molecular design professionals from industry who
seek to extend their expertise through non-proprietary, non-confidential
scientific studies as well as scientist managers (team leaders, project
managers, and others) faced with immediate responsibilities in scientific
fields outside their primary area of specialization. Visits in residence
may involve interaction with UCSF experts in fields as diverse as chemical
library design, informatics, drug delivery, toxicology and pharmacokinetics
as well as interaction with physicians who specialize in therapeutic areas.
Workshops in Structure Based Molecular Design can
be developed in response to interest by Corporate Scholars Program
Members. In the workshop setting Corporate Scholars interact intensively
with faculty and with peers from industry facing similar challenges. Answers
to some questions.
Benefits
and Stipend
Corporate Membership includes:
Participation by company scientists in the
UCSF
MDI Scientific Meetings Series without fee during the term of company
membership. Member companies are acknowledged as sponsors
of
the UCSF Scientific Meetings Series
Visits by company management to UCSF hosted
by the Institute.
Short scientific visits to UCSF (or a visit
in residence of up to four weeks by one scientist) over the course of a
year to establish scientific dialog with UCSF faculty or a 12 month
sabbatical hosted by a faculty laboratory. Scientist visitors include
Heads of Drug Discovery and/or CAMD groups and/or professionals seeking
state of the art knowledge of a specific field or subject and broad knowledge
of drug discovery.
Companies plan their Yearly Program
in interaction with the MDI/CSP. The Program is customized through
interaction of the MDI/CSP and the person delegated by the company to manage
their end of the interaction. The Program can, of course, be
customized to address long term goals for a group as well as goals of individual
scientists. Thus, the Corporate Scholars Program allows groups from industry
to establish relationships with UCSF faculty which may develop over time
into research collaborations or other forms of collaboration.
As an example, a multi year membership
can be developed that not only supports the director of a CAMD group but
provides sabbatical visits for experienced group members and exposure to
a broad range of fields for new members as they are hired.
To initiate a dialog regarding Program
membership, contact the Director of the Program
or
Director
of the Institute. The yearly stipend is US$25,000. We envision
that the Program will foster long term relationships of scientists from
industry, their sponsoring companies and UCSF.
